Many years ago I had my one and only sabbatical year at Massey College at the University of Toronto where I lived and ate with the graduate students who live there. It was a very good time for me when I was writing my biography of the Scottish philosopher, John Macmurray. Among the best moments were the conversations at dinner on subjects as diverse as science and religion, sex and chastity, what we mean by "transcendence," and if it makes any sense to use the terms 'real' or 'unreal' about religion--and especially mystical experiences. In this article, I'd like to revisit this last, very interesting topic.
