Portrait of a Jesuit: Father St. Clair Monaghan, SJ (1906 to 1997)

On June 3, 1997, at age 91, St. Clair Monaghan, SJ died. Thee days later, at his funeral, John Pungente, SJ, was asked to speak about this remarkable Jesuit who had such a lasting impact on Catholic education in Manitoba. St. Clair was a man "dedicated to God . . . filled with faith and love" as St. Paul would put it. Today's posting - the homily that John Pungente, SJ gave on that day - eighteen years ago - attempts to capture the spirit of the remarkable St. Clair Monaghan, SJ.

It's probably only in our own imaginations – I doubt that even Hollywood's special effects could do it justice – only in our own imaginations could we see that almost unbelievable scene that took place all those centuries ago and which is described in the Christmas Gospel so simply: "And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly host, praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among those he favours."

St. Ignatius of Loyola – who founded the Jesuits in the 16th century - had the insight that we all live in imagined worlds, and that our imagination constructs the worlds in which we live, using our experiences, our lived contexts, our hopes, our pains and our joys. In effect we live in a highly selective world, and this world defines what is possible for us. It also defines how we see ourselves, how we interact with others and the context in which we find ourselves.

Today the media – particularly film and television – are powerful influences on our imagination. It is film and television which propose to us forms of the world and ways in which we might behave in those forms.

Beyond the Screen - Trance

So, what did Oscar winning director Danny Boyle do in his free time while directing the Opening ceremonies of the London 2012 Summer Olympics watched by an audience of close to a billion people with a cast of 10,000 including Queen Elizabeth II playing - well – Queen Elizabeth II. To begin with he directed a successful West End production of Frankenstein featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, who are currently playing separate Sherlocks on TV shows. And if that wasn't enough Boyle also shot Trance, a psychological heist thriller.
